NaNo Meme - Day 12 to 18
Imagine you’re behind in your word count goals (even if you’re not) and are going to pull an all-nighter to catch up. Screencap a playlist of inspirational music you would use to get you up to speed.

I'll do you one better, I'll link to it! It's not my regular writing playlist, but a music medely from an anime I'm going to watch after NaNo is over. Always get me in "fighting mode", so I can catch up with my word count!

Name a male character from your novel. Describe him through the point of view and words of the female character you introduced in question 3 (if they never interact, pick another female character).

"Lykos? Yes, he's my brother. How to describe him... Well, he's older than me, but younger than Bernike. He was born closer to her age than mine, before my mother joined father and their mother's marriage. He's always been a very kind soul, always calm and gentle. Don't let that fool you though, he's got a sharp mind and loves to rile up those who can't control their temper as well as he; Bernike is his favorite victim, since she's always nearby when we're at home, but anyone will do really. Don't underestimate him in a fight either. He's not one of the guards, but he's handy with knives and needles and can reshape anything to suit his needs, should he be cornered. He's also a great debater. And now I think I've sung his praise enough; you can't tell by looking at that serene smile of his, but on the inside his ego is steadily growing too big for his body to keep up. He'll explode before too long, I'm sure of it!"

Is the sexuality of your characters a large part of your novel’s story? If so, are there characters who deviate from the heterosexual “norm”? In what way?

Yes and no. It's not a romance novel, but the characters do comment on who they think is attractive and romantic relationships do exist and matter (just like the friendship and family relationships matter and drive the plot forward). The entire cast definitely deviate from the heterosexual norm. Both of the societies that are the main focus of the story couldn't care less about who you fall in love/lust with (unless said person is a child) or who you wish to marry. My one main character (Dylis) is homosexual and in love with her good friend Rhian, while her brother (Glaw, the other main character) is bisexual.

Other than that, there are a ton of same-sex couples popping up here and there, as well as a polyamorous relationship (though I'm leaving that one up for interpretation, as it's not really vital to the plot and the main characters wouldn't come to that conclusion unless it was outright stated by the three people in question).

Do any of your characters have a disability or mental illness? If so, how does that affect their development throughout your story?

My main female character (Dylis) is deaf and only speaks in sign language. This of course means she can't eavesdrop on other characters and that sneaking up on her is relatively easy as long as you stay out of her line of sight. However, she's an expert at reading body language and very observant (which you sort of have to be if you're deaf and in the military at the same time). It's a bit of a challenge to write since a) I'm very used to writing in reactions to sounds in my stories, especially in action scenes and b) I'm trying to not make her character all about her being deaf, which is tricky since I'm aware I could slip up and thus might be going too much in the opposite direction...

Other than her, I have supporting character called Cato, who has a mental illness caused by a telepathic accident some years back. He's still a competent warrior, but socially he's unconventional, talks to himself a lot and he can zone out now and then.

At around the half-way point, it bears mentioning that most of us wrimos have other obligations beside simply hitting that elusive word count. What else do you have going on in your life (work, school, children, neurotic pets, etc.), and just how much are you shafting it to win NaNo?

Oh dear, this question. Uhm... Well, the first week I was sort of free. I'm writing my master thesis at the moment, but me and my co-writer can't really do much now before the second round of testing (which will be in August) so yeah. But then my little sister came to visit, we went to a big anime & game convention (during which I barely wrote anything) and now I'm at my parents' place until the end of July. Can't very well ignore the people giving me free room and food, or my sister, so I'll be slowing down now towards the end.

Though I must admit that the biggest distraction I've got is my parents' cat; well, my cat too. He's usually a very quite companion, who likes to sleep next to me while I write, but since my sister and mother went to visit me at my place, leaving my dad alone with him, he's been quite worried. He's a bit more of a sheepdog that cat (he's a Siberian) so he's never too happy to see the "pack" split; this of course means that he's overjoyed everytime it's reunited and especially when I also tag along (I lived at home the first three months of his life with us, so I count as "pack" too apparently). And a happy cat is a cat that wants to spend "active" time with me, which means a lot of cuddling and petting = less writing time.

In what time period is your novel set? Is it in this world or another?

Another world, definitely. The time period equivalent to our world would be roughly early 1900s for the main society, while the rest of the world is hanging about in the 1600-1700s (due to magic and science not being all that popular in those parts, which means the main society - the Empire - has done several "jumps" forward in technology that the rest of the world has missed out on).

Who is the antagonist in your novel? What drives their actions?

Bit of a spoiler, that. All I can say is that there's a main "trio" of antagonists, who all work in the shadows. They're all driven to do what in their minds are "the best for their people", but who "their people" is and what actually is "best" varies between all of them.
